6/52 - I Made It!

This homemade muesli is a staple in our house.  Everyone enjoys it and it's nice and healthy, so I thought I'd share the recipe

Ingredients:
3 cups oats
1 cup wheatgerm
1/4 cup sesame seeds
1/4 cup linseeds
1/4 cup sunflower seeds
1/4 cup ground almonds
Handful chopped walnuts *optional
1 Tbsp Barley Malt
1 Tbsp Black strap Molasses
1/4 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil or Walnut Oil
1 tsp Natural Vanilla Extract
1 tsp Cinnamon
1/2 cup Coconut
2 Cups Raisins or Currants - or you can make a mix, I like currants, dried cranberries, goji berries & dried pomegranite arils

Method:
- Preheat oven to 180 degrees celcius
- In a large mixing bowl combine the oats, wheatgerm, seeds and nuts.
- In a seperate bowl or measuring jug mix the barley malt and molasses in some warm water, then add oil, vanilla extract & cinnamon.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredient and mix thoroughly.
- Sread over a baking sheet or two (depending on size of your baking sheets) and bake until golden brown, stirring occasionally.  Should take 10-20 minutes
- Keep an eye on it to make sure the edges don't burn!
- Remove from oven, and add your raisins and coconut and let cool.
- Store in the fridge unless you plow through it a few days like my family, in which case it will be fine in the cupboard :)

Let me know if you make this and enjoy it...or not!
And don't worry to much about following it exactly, you can add more or less of the various ingredients, you can add your own preferences, you can leave out or substitute if you're missing an ingredient, it's more of a guideline than an exact science ;)

So...the week that was

It has been a tiring few weeks for us, in fact it has been over a month since I personally had a single decent nights rest.  Unfortunately the rest of the family have all been afflicted with the most awful cough and it's been keeping everyone up at night, and just as one person seems to get better another person starts.

We're hoping though that it is finally on it's way out and that we'll be getting some rest soon.
On the plus side I seem to have escaped thus far, and it hasn't affected everyone badly besides our littlest, so everyone else has still been bubbling along fine in the day, and at least our baby is better now!  I've barely had time to use my camera lately but here are just a few snaps I did manage over the last week.

She put this outfit together herself and I thought it looked fabulous so I had to snap a pic.  What do you think, pretty stylish no?

And the littlest doing his current favourite which is stretching his arms up to the sky.  Very cute!  And look you can see how skinny his little legs are.  He's never been the biggest baby and when he was sick the last few weeks he did lose the little bit of chubbiness he did have...but we're working hard at putting it back on as you can see!

So...Goodbye Two, Hello Three!

A little girl in our house has been patiently awaiting her birthday.  Finally the right weekend arrived, and on the big day when she woke up we wished her.  She shook her head and said "No, my birthday tomorrow." and declined opening her presents too.  Finally after a bit of breakfast  and a gander at the party packs which appeared over night she was ready to open them.

Then it was off to prep for the little woodlands party we had planned for her, and before we knew it our guests had arrived and fun was being had.

Happy birthday precious girl, we hope you had a special day!

So...These summer days

have been oh so hot!

Here's a bit of the unschooling we've been up to over the last week.

We've explored ponds and found fish and crabs and dragon flies and all sorts of life.  We watched a daddy fish protect his cloud of tiny babies, who stuck close to mom, from other hungry fish, and watched a crab catch and eat a small fish.

We had picnics and played with friends
Pirates invaded and took over some of our territories
Snacks became multi purpose as finger hats and helped with a bit of maths

And when it just got too hot and one of us wasn't too fond of the sprinklers the others were running through, then we just had to cool off in the kitchen sink.
